Rowland Taylor's Ghost: Looking back on 2021 and all that in Hadleigh

By Derek Davis

Christian martyr Rowland Taylor was a Protestant rector in Hadleigh of some repute during the Reformation, and subsequent reversal.

His beliefs, values, and simple views were not always well-received and he was burnt to death at a stake, with his last words to his faithful flock reputedly stating: "Good people of Hadleigh, I have taught you nothing but God's holy word and those lessons that I have taken out of God's blessed book, the Holy Bible. Come hither this day to seal it with my blood."

A monument to the Reverend Rowland Taylor sits in a field between Hadleigh and Aldham Common as a reminder of his goodness but he cannot be silenced in stone.

Rowland Taylor's Ghost lives through a regular Hadleigh Nub News column where his acerbic wit, pointed references and incisive observations get to the heart of matters concerning the town and its outlying villages.

Well-written, often commented upon, loved by his many followers and disliked by some of those he calls to account, Rowland Taylor's Ghost has been a must-read stable throughout 2021 and he is already sharpening the quill for 2022.

Here are a few of Rowland Taylor's Ghost acclaimed musings from the past year, where Maritime, Queenie, Bolter, Moronsons and Generalissimo are in his spectred sights.

Talking about the three cons: confidence, Conservatives and conflict control.
