The Spirit of Guthrum: Overlooked again by Hadleigh

By Derek Davis

Late one night last week I was doing my twice-weekly round, haunting, with the usual stop-offs at The Kings Head, The George, the kebab shop, and The Eight Bells. Not necessarily in that order.

Something caught my eye in a shop window in the High Street. A poster for an exhibition the following day in the town hall on 'Hadleigh's Overlooked Heritage'. Now, I've had my fingers burnt before but like a fool I went along to see if I got a mention.

After all, am I a Hadleigh resident? Tick. Reckon I am the first Hadleigh-an to be named in the historical record. Am I 'Heritage'? Yes, obvs. Overlooked? Too right.

Not gonna lie, I learned a lot. About the historic houses in the town. Some of them quite humble abodes. Afjordable housing, as we Vikings call it, haha.

But to cut to the chase: I didn't get a name-check.

One consolation was that, for once, neither did the blessed Rowland Taylor.

So I came away more knowledgeable and not as disgruntled as I might have been, to be honest.

But it would be nice, one day, to stumble across a poster for an exhibition about me. 'Guthrum: The Hadleigh Years'. Or maybe: 'Guthrum: Better Than Great'. I'll leave that with you.

Anyway, to commiserate I went straight to The George for a few jars. Ended up making a real exhibition of myself, haha.
