The Hadleigh society are looking for public involvement at selecting non-designated heritage assets in the town.

Working in association with the town council, the Hadleigh Society is compiling a local list of non-listed buildings in the town, based on their architecture or historic association, which could merit special mention in the list non-designated heritage assets for the market town.

The society's draft selection currently contains 92 entries covering 174 individual properties and places lying within in the town, but they are seeking help in ensuring non have been missed.

Among those already included are homes in Angel Street, George Street, and Castle Road, along with Bridge Street, High Street buildings and the former Babergh council offices at Corks Lane.

Hadleigh Society secretary Richard Fletcher, said: "We may all be familiar with knowing what listed buildings are, as nationally important buildings of special architectural or historic interest. But there are so many more buildings and places within a community that define its own very specific architecture, history and heritage.

"National listing of buildings has generally concentrated on buildings built before 1840, it is not unsurprising that the majority of eligible properties identified in this local list are post 1840, with most dating between the mid or late Victorian period, although it does include a few Georgian and earlier buildings, as well as some built in the twentieth century up to the 1970s."

The pubic are invited to an exhibition called Hadleigh's Overlooked Heritage, which has been arranged to be held in the Hadleigh town hall's dining room, Market Place, Hadleigh on Friday 17 and Saturday 18 September 2021 between 10am to 4pm each day.

Mr Fletcher added: "In compiling a local list it is very important that the local community have their input.

"The exhibition will be displaying many examples of properties which are considered to possess local heritage value, whilst asking the community to make contributions to this local list.

"Either by nominating properties they consider may merit inclusion, and or providing historical photographs and information to be added to currently selected properties."
