Despite suffering broken ribs and coughing up blood, Hadleigh United's player manager Steve Holder is determined to get back to leading his side up the league table.

Holder, was left in agony after being wiped out by Swaffham keeper Charlie Phillips in the Brettsiders' 2-0 home win on Saturday. The keeper was yellow carded, Holder won a penalty and Joel Glover tucked away the spot kick.

Holder was playing well and putting himself about, laying the ball off and forcing Hadleigh forward before having t be helped off.

Not that he can recall much of the incident which has left him with cracked ribs at the higher part of his chest.

"All I can remember is going up for the ball with the keeper and the next thing I knew I was on the floor," said Holder. "I was out for a bit and can't remember him landing on me or everything.

"I watched the penalty go in and then the ambulance people were there very quickly.

"I want to thank those two ladies and everyone else at the club who really helped me."

While the three points eased the pain somewhat, Holder was still struggling after initially being treated at Ipswich hostel on Saturday night.

However, after an uncomfortable night and coughing up blood his sister took Holder to West Suffolk hospital on Sunday and returned home in the afternoon.

Holder, a fire security consultant, will be taking a few days off to recover but knows the team is in good hands with newly appointed assistant manager Andy Lambert, who will take charge of training this week ahead of United's game Premier Division game at Mildenhall on Saturday.

"Andy did a terrific job, he is good bloke and he will be sorting things out for me this week while I rest up," said Holder as Hadleigh edged up to sixth bottom.

"I still feel the league table is a bit false as we have games in hands on the team below us and a decent goal average.

"It is all about us looking up now and not what is going on below us."

Lambert successfully steps up.
