Sunday's Hadleigh Breakfast Briefing

By Derek Davis

29th Nov 2020 | Local News

On this day in 1530, Suffolk's very own Thomas Wolsey, English Cardinal and Lord Chancellor, died en route from York to his imprisonment in the Tower of London of natural causes. Wolsey, the son of an Ipswich butcher, was a regular visitor to the Shotley peninsula and Erwarton Hall in particular but it was his failure while Cardinal to secure permission from the Pope to divorce Catherine of Aragon so he marry Anne Boleyn, that caused his downfall. Wolsey did though help introduce a new tax system when he was Chancellor, which meant a shilling in every pound was taxed, so the poorer paid less and the rich more.

Joke of the day

I can not believe it. She drags me all the way from Billingsgate to Richmond to play about the weakest practical joke since Cardinal Wolsey got his nob out at Hampton Court and stood at the end of the passage pretending to be a door

Sunday reflection

Hail Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life our sweetness and our hope.

To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us and after this our exile show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary!
