Nub News has taken on its second Kickstart recruit to boost its hyperlocal coverage on the Shotley peninsula, Felixstowe and Hadleigh areas.
Amber Markwell, who has recently graduated from Leicester University with Batchelor's degree in English, with first class honours, has joined Nub News as a Community Reporter.
Amber will be looking to meet with community leaders, club and group organisers, business people and residents with a story to tell and those looking to promote events or raise awareness for charity fundraisers.
As she increases the news, features, What's On pages and Local List business directory on Felixstowe Nub News, Amber will learn new experiences and skills to help her progress.
The Kickstart scheme is designed to give young people aged between 16 and 24 that are searching for work, including university graduates or recently redundant and are claiming Universal Credit, a six month paid work placement in an area they are particularly interested in.
For Amber, Nub News offers an opportunity to explore journalism, while keeping her options open, and broadening her horizons.
"After graduating from university, I really wanted to gain some work experience using the skills I have learnt from my degree," said Amber. "The Kickstart initiative made it a lot easier for me to find companies that are willing to help with this, including Nub News where I am working now.
"With Kickstart's emphasis on helping young people gain experience in the workplace, the usual barrier of 'experience needed' in job applications has been removed.
"My plan for now is to head back to university to start a Master's degree. This makes the length of the six month placements perfect for me to boost my CV and, hopefully, make my future applications more desirable to employers."
Derek Davis, Nub News (Suffolk) editor said: "Amber was an outstanding candidate during the interview process and we are looking forward to working with her over the next six months.
"It was not just her fabulous qualifications that stood out, but her calm determination, initiative, positive attitude and aptitude. Amber has already made a strong start with Nub News in Felixstowe and we can arm her with even more skills and experience going forward.
"Amber is another good example of the talent available through the Kickstart Scheme, which Nub news is delighted to support."
Working in conjunction with Suffolk Chamber of Commerce and the Job Centre, Nub News in Suffolk has already taken on a Kickstarter to mainly cover the Hadleigh area.
Fraser Clements, who was educated at an English Language school in Singapore, has been busily meeting community leaders in the market town, and gaining experience as a hyperlocal reporter. Full story here...
