Britain's first woman doctor, Elizabeth Garrett Anderson from Suffolk, passed the final exam of the Medical Faculty of the Sorbonne and became a fully qualified MD, on this day in 1870. The A&E wing at Ipswich hospital is named after Mrs Garrett Anderson, and a room at Endeavour House, home to Babergh council, bears her name.
