Did you know?

On this day in 1799, HMS Lutine set sail from the east coast of England carrying almost £1.2m in gold and silver bullion, but sunk in the North Sea, with the loss of 240 men. The ship's bell was salvaged from the wreck in 1858 and was later presented to shipping insurers Lloyds of London. The Lutine Bell has been rung ever since to mark a maritime disaster.
