Green councillor urges people in Hadleigh area to do more to save planet after damning climate change report

A leading Green councillor has insisted people in the Hadleigh area need to do their bit in the face of a damning climate change report.

The report, dubbed Code Red, delivered by the United Nation's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), showed that since 1970, the global surface temperatures have risen faster than any other 50 year period over the past 2,000 years.

Prof Ed Hawkins who worked as an author on the report said "It is a statement of fact, we cannot be any more certain; it is unequivocal and indisputable that humans are warming the planet."

Leigh Jamieson, Babergh district councillor and leader of its Green Party, pointed to some things householders can do, and said: "It is important that we all do our bit in a small way, such as cutting down on car journeys, particularly small ones, cutting down on our meat intake, insulating our homes effectively and moving away from fossil fuelled heating if we can."

Although startling in its content, Cllr Jamieson, whose South East Cosford ward covers, Aldham, Chelsworth, Elmsett , Kersey, Lindsey, Nedging-with-Naughton, Semer and Whatfield ,was not surprised at the 42 page document's headline grabbing findings.

He said: "The report is highlighting the situation that we feared would be the case. That we have already gone too far to prevent climate change from happening.

"The situation that we are in now is to see if we can limit the damage that will be done.

"As we see from the fires raging in Greece, and now Italy, the full effects of climate change will eventually dwarf the effects of the pandemic if we do not take immediate action."

The 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as COP26, is the 26th United Nations Climate Change conference, is scheduled to be held in the city of Glasgow from 31 October to 12 November 2021 under the presidency of the United Kingdom, and Cllr Jamieson sees this as a damning report that must be acted upon.

"With COP26 just around the corner this report is a decisive wake up call that countries must do more," said Cllr Jamieson.

"We need to lead the way by scrapping plans for more oilfields and by forcing developers to stop thinking of the bottom line and start delivering carbon zero homes."

Councils at Babergh, Mid Suffolk and Suffolk County declared a climate emergency two years ago, but there are concerns that they have taken limited action in tackling the issues.

Cllr Jamieson urged Nub News readers to be proactive in stating their concerns.

He added: "We need our government and local authorities to take this seriously if we are going to stand a chance of limiting the damage.

Our current economic system isn't only destroying our planet, it's failing to provide for millions of people. Deep change in the structure of our economy is crucial if we're to build sustainable future. An economy that is not based around growth."

He continued: "I would therefore ask your readers to email and write to their MP's urging them to take action now. I would also ask them to write to the leaders of both Suffolk and Babergh councils.

"Reducing the carbon emissions of the council itself, while important, is not enough. We need to look at the bigger picture."
