Hungry Hack food review: The Flying Guardsman

By Fraser Clements

Entering the flying guardsman is a cosying experience, it's small and the decor is bland, but what it lacks in the aesthetic department, it more than makes up for with its friendly service and excellent food.

The overall menu is definitely more a breakfast or brunch type arrangement, boasting full English's an arrangement of sandwiches and wraps, burgers and hotdogs for mains.

My guest and I decided to sit up stairs which was still quite snug. We were greeted by friendly and instantly attentive staff.

We both opted to try their burger, whilst I went for the impressive vegan option that even had cheese my guest went for the TFG burger, which is their very own special house made. We also ordered a vegan hotdog to try as well.

It was rather a cold day so we had to have their excellent hot chocolate for our drinks, which both looked and tasted great, but you can't really go wrong with a hot chocolate.

Unfortunately the food ended up taking over 40 minutes to come up to us. On the bright side it gave us plenty of time to chat. The food was warm and all the meals presented well ,both burgers smelt and looked like a classic beef burger, even the vegan option.

The first bite is when it became obvious that the Flying Guardsman is clearly a hidden gem, and you shouldn't always judge a book by its cover.

From the fresh crispy texture of the bread to the actual flavour profile of the burger, they really understood vegan food.

My guest said that his burger tasted incredible as well and he especially liked the fresh bread too.

However their chips were a bit of disappointment, being way to skinny and over cooked is not great mix, this is something that could be improved.

The hotdog was also a pleasant surprise, with its onions and classic mustard topping.

Hotdogs are something that are difficult to come by as a vegan, its nice to see the effort and the execution in the food put into the meal as it allows for more people who have different dietary necessity to sit with their family and still enjoy a meal together.

Overall the experience was fairly good, a great meat up place for a coffee and chat and if you do try the food, for the most part, its a pleasant surprise.
