Hadleigh mayor Frank Minns has agreed to lobby senior Suffolk politicians in a bid to halt TSB's plans to close it branch in the town's High Street.
Nub News reported on September 30 how the branch on the corner of Market Place and the High Street would be shut permanently closed as part of TSB's nationwide closures of branches.
The town council voted to write to Babergh, Suffolk County Council and South Suffolk MP James Cartlidge asking them to support a joint objection to the proposed closure of the TSB Hadleigh branch in May 2021.
Cllr Minns "I'm sure everyone is fully aware of the serious effects this would have on the town. Not just because a town without a bank would be somehow like being without a front tooth but also because a lot of people rely on the branch. There are a lot of people who do not do internet banking.
"One only has to see the queues outside the bank at the moment, granted social distancing might have an effect, but it is very heavily used.
"It would deprive local businesses the ability to get change, because despite what the bank seems to want a lot of businesses still run on cash.
"It would take away the only night safe in Hadleigh and would mean businesses have to take their takings to Sudbury or Ipswich. So, I think this is a thoroughly bad idea."
There was widespread agreement among two councillors with councillor Andrew Knock pointing out limited services ould still be available in the town centre.
He said: "Hopefully we can get TSB to change their minds, meanwhile there are banking services available in the Post Office, so we would not be without banking facilities completely but they would be restricted and it is not ideal."
Babergh leader John Ward has vowed to do what we can to support the campaign, while a spokesman for Suffolk councils said they would wait until they had seen the full details of the letter before responding. Nub News contacted Mr Cartlidge asking if he would support the town council and what his views were on protecting High Street businesses, but he has so far failed to respond.
