Outrage expressed as it is confirmed TSB in Hadleigh will close next year

Hadleigh residents and business owners have expressed their anger at the closure of the TSB bank in the town's high street, just months after the closure of Barclay's Bank

The TSB branch on the corner of market Place and the High Street will close in May next year as part of a second wave of closures following a number of closures already this year.

A TSB spokesman said: "We've looked carefully at our Ipswich, Hadleigh branch and how it is used, and we've taken the decision to close it.

"There are a number of other branches you can visit, including Ipswich, Buttermarket below, which is 10 miles away from the closing branch. To find the branch most convenient for you, please go to tsb.co.uk/branch-locator."

But residents took to social media to express their outrage and frustration with variety of comments outlining concerns at losing the only remaining bank in the town.

Many on Hadleigh Noticeboard Facebook group told how they had switched to the TSB after Barclays closed last year so they could benefit from counter service. Others expressed concern at the job losses for local staff who work there, how local people and businesses would be affected and how it was a sad indictment on a town that is growing and looking to attract more visitors to help boost the economy.

Concerns were raised for people without internet to do online banking, and those who enjoy the personal contact at branches and others were worried the closure would mean longer queues at the post offices and Ipswich Building Society, although they don't offer as wide a range of services.

TSB said the changes have been driven by a significant shift in customer behaviour, including a reduction in the number of customers using branches and a big acceleration in digital adoption.

Debbie Crosbie, chief executive of TSB, said: "Closing any of our branches is never an easy decision, but our customers are banking differently – with a marked shift to digital banking.

"We are reshaping our business to transform the customer experience and set us up for the future.

"This means having the right balance between branches on the high street and our digital platforms, enabling us to offer the very best experience for our personal and business customers across the UK."
