Babergh leader John Ward has slammed a group of car parking protesters as bringing shame on Hadleigh after his home was targeted earlier today.

A convoy of around 15 cars drove from Bridge Street in Hadleigh to councillor Ward's home in Boxford this morning, with one man allegedly trying to force his way into the house, but was pushed back by Cllr Ward's daughter.

"I was out at the time but my daughter was in and to have around 15 people turn up at your house in the manner they did, and for pone to try and push his way in, was very intimidating for her," Cllr Ward told Nub News. "It was shameful behaviour by certain people.

"They have not just shamed themselves but they have shamed the whole town. Hadleigh is a lovely town but to be represented by people like this is something they don't deserve.

"For them to also mix like this was a flagrant disregard to the Covid restrictions while we are in Tier 4.

"There was also the potential for a catastrophic accident by stopping on a fast moving road like this."

A Suffolk police spokeswoman said: "Suffolk Police were contacted at 11.52am today (Wednesday 30 December) following reports that a number of vehicles had turned up on a driveway at a residential address on Hadleigh Road in Boxford.

"The vehicles had left prior to police arrival but enquiries are continuing and officers would like to hear from anyone who may have any information about the incident.

"Anyone with any information is asked to contact Suffolk Police on 101 quoting crime reference number 37/75184/20."

The protest was organised by Hadleigh businessman Ian Grutchfield over plans to reduce free parking in the town's council-owned cars, along with other Babergh car parks in the district.

Mr Grutchfield asked protester to meet at Bridge Street car park in Hadleigh, it is understood the convoy then drove to Cllr Ward's house in Boxford.

Mr Grutchfield has been approached for comment.
