The first ever King Guthrum Group supporters Meet n Greet was held on Friday 22nd April, at St Mary's Church, Hadleigh.
This was a get together of local people interested in Guthrum and the King Guthrum Group – a group to promote the heritage link between Hadleigh and Guthrum, the Danish King of East Anglia (regnal dates c.878 – c.890).
"It was wonderful to see such an encouraging number of Hadleigh residents attend, all enthusiastic to know more about King Guthrum. Many of them, like me, were keen to see the Group support tourism in Hadleigh, as well as being interested in history, and King Guthrum in particular", said Kathryn Grandon, one of the group's trustees.
Over refreshments, we talked over the group's plans and aspirations.
A lot of ideas came out. One of the attendees, it was suggested, may even be a descendant of,
if not Guthrum himself, then possibly one of his fellow 9th Century Danish migrators. A special inaugural cake from EriVica Cakes of Hadleigh, depicting a Viking longship, doves, ravens and Runic script, provoked a spontaneous round of applause.
A big thank you to everyone who came along. To become a supporter of the King Guthrum Group, subscribe to our email newsletter and get notice of future events, email us at [email protected], and follow us on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/KingGuthrumGroup
