After a year of hitting the right jazz notes, reviewer Robert Carr performs an encore
The great thing about jazz is that it encompasses such a vast range of music.
From original masterpieces by jazz legends to interpretations of works from various musical genres, listeners can discover all manner of pieces to enjoy.
Over decades of attending shows, I've witnessed many re-imaginings of famous works. In the 1960s, Jacques Loussier Trio's interpretation of J.S. Bach's compositions; a couple of years ago, Sergio Mendes's Bossa Nova re-arrangement of a classic Beatles' song. Just two memorable examples at London venues.
The 2022 round-up of my Suffolk jazz scene for Nub News begins with February's appearance at Hadleigh Jazz Club by Matt Ford & The Matt Regan Quartet, where they swung their way through 20th-century standards.

In April, irrepressible saxophone star Derek Nash and his Quartet breezed into Hadleigh, exciting Club regulars with original compositions together with his takes on established pieces.

Come August, it was over to the Two Sisters Arts Centre near Felixstowe for the debut performance of the Oscar Lyons Quartet - another evening of originals and dazzling improvisations by the young musicians.
In November, the scene shifted to the Ipswich Jazz & Blues Club. Dudley Moore was well-known for his Beethoven parodies, but top jazz combo, the Chris Ingham Quartet, presented a memorable show of original compositions firmly planted in his own time.
Early December saw another brilliant show at the same club. Jazz-funk legends Shakatak reminded those lucky enough to be there about how good a band they are with two hours of hit after hit from the 1980s.

To complete the round-up of my six picks, the action could only return to the Hadleigh Jazz Club for the annual Christmas show, which has grown into the town's seasonal must-go-to-event.

I've now completed six years of online reviewing in Hadleigh, Ipswich and Felixstowe. Last year was my best yet, and I am still certain that nothing can beat attending live entertainment. As musicians often urge: "Keep it live."
Happy New Jazz Year to you.
