The story goes that the ungulate devil asked the blacksmith to put shoes on his hooves. When the blacksmith burned and nailed the shoes on, it caused the devil so much pain that the blacksmith was able to make a pact with the devil. Once he promised never to enter a property with a horseshoe hanging above the door the blacksmith removed the horseshoes.
