In 1809, Charles Darwin, English naturalist and author of The Origin of Species, was born, in Shrewsbury. Darwin, who established that all species of life have descended over time from common ancestry, and proposed that this branching pattern of evolution resulted from a process that he called natural selection. Darwin wrote part of his final manuscript The Formation of Vegetable Mould, Through the Action of Worms in a Suffolk vicarage, in what is now a care home, and it was a best seller.
