Charlie explained he had chosen the song for the audition to honour his dad and aded: "My late father was Australian.
"It was really special and a real healing experience to honour him over there".
Although Charlie has a single out on sale, 'Lonely' he has had to pay his way in other ways.
He said: "I've been chipping away at the industry for the last few years but have still had to work non-music jobs just to get by."
Although Jessica Mauboy was the first judge to turn their chair around, and Jason Derulo quickly following, Charlie chose former Eurovision Song contestant Guy Sebastian as his mentor for the competition.
Charlie first applied for the show a few months before the auditions. The process included late night zoom calls and interviews before the show flew Charlie out for the audition.
