Saturday's Hadleigh Breakfast Briefing

By Derek Davis

On This Day - in 1935, the Royal National Institute for the Blind distributed its first Talking Books of players and records to blind and partially sighted people. Talking Books was the brainchild of an officer who lost his sight during the First World War. Captain Ian Fraser was blinded during the Battle of the Somme in 1916. He tried to learn braille but found it too difficult. In frustration, he thought, "If books could only talk!" He came up with idea of recording a "talking book", and in 1918 he started working with RNIB to find a solution.

Quote of the day:

Initially, my confidence took a massive dent, but something that really helped me was participating in a 'Living with Sight Loss' course run by my local sight loss charity. I found it incredibly beneficial. I met other people who were in a similar situation to me and together, we shared hints, tips and stories. It made me realise that I was not on my own and it really helped me to re"build my confidence. My group still meets up regularly and we continue to support each other.

Steve

Joke of the day:

Why don't blind people skydive?

– Because it scares their dogs too much.
