Owls' wings come with silencers. Comb-like feathers break up the air on the leading edge of their wings, while the velvety texture and soft fringe on the trailing edge dampens any ‘swoosh’ sounds. All these refinements streamline air flow and allow owls to fly almost silently. Being able to fly without making a sound helps owls to pounce on prey unannounced, but it also allows them to seek out prey without hearing their own wing beats.
