On This Day: in 1857, 24 Victoria Crosses were awarded in the Second Relief of Lucknow (British India). It was the most awarded in a single day. The HMS Ganges Museum, in Suffolk, is home to a replica VC, awarded to Leading Seaman Magennis for his heroics in freeing explosives and helping to save the crew of a midget submarine in an attack on the Japanese cruiser Takao in Singapore. A VC winner is commemorated on Felixstowe war memorial with Ernest Seaman VC, MM (16 August 1893 – 29 September 1918) who once worked at a hotel in the town.
