Swan Inn, Monks Eleigh closed suddenly

Pub goers have given a mixed reaction after a traditional hostelry in a village near Hadleigh suddenly closed.

The owner of the The Swan in The Street, Monks Eleigh, announced its closure on its Facebook page earlier this week, sparking a furious reaction.

The statement posted on the pub's social media page on Tuesday said: "The Swan M E Ltd has ceased trading from The Swan, Monks Eleigh with immediate effect.

"The Swan will be closed until further notice."

According to Companies House, 62-year-old Denis Young based in Sudbury, is the sole director of The Swan M E Ltd and has run the pub since May last year.

Previous owners Julie and Stehen Penney would be welcomed back

It is understood previous owner Julie Penney will be reopening the pub, which also has three bedrooms, a single, a double and a family room, although no date has been set.

According to social media her return, along with partner Stephen will be welcome by users, within the village and further afield.

Kayleigh Brooks-Huter said: "I was saddened, but not surprised when I saw the post initially - but then reading the comments I can see Julie has taken back control of the page and I'm SO EXCITED for this."

However, Mr Young's tenure, was met with mixed reviews with posts on social media ranging from:

Robert Kennedy who said: This is a sad day. My daughter and family stayed in the Swan over Christmas and were well looked after. We do hope that new owners will take over and with village support it will flourish."

And John Hunt saying: "On a personal note because of this I would like to take this opportunity to offer thanks to Jade & Red for going above and beyond in their efforts to keep The Swan open and successful, you did great!

"Thank you to Lou and Racheal and of course the part time bar man 'Jim'."

However, Nat Dines added: "It's sad, but I'm glad Julie is back! I will definitely come down now! After being completely let down with my wedding bar by the new owners I refused to go in there."

Another poster said: "I'm off to do the lottery; as my predication on this came true."

While, Sharon Ghannam posted: "Sadly we all saw this coming, a pub that was more concerned with it's other pub than ours, no brainer….. A pub that consistently let the Monks Eleigh residents down, cancelling events, cancelling lunch bookings, with very spurious reasons.

"Sadly most of us saw this coming ….. All Monks Eleighens want is a local pub with local brews and a local pub menu, no faffing around, just simple pub grub ."

Denis Young (left) shut Swan down after nine months

Mr Young defended his nine months in charge by pointing out he had provided:

  • Local ales … Mauldons moletrap
  • Adnams broadside are our beers
  • They were asked by the locals & we took notice & gave them what they wanted
  • Re food
  • I assume you never ventured in at a lunchtime ?
  • The menu is displayed on this page
  • It includes & has done for months the following
  • Jacket potato
  • Lasagne
  • Fish chips
  • Steak ale pie
  • Sunday roasts ( can't get more traditional then that)
  • If with respect of you had taken the time to check our menu & lunch menu you would have seen what you now state we did not supply
  • Re quiz nights dart nights
  • If I'm right we did hold a quiz night to raise money for charity
  • I would hardly call the swan a gastro pub if you disagree then please define what a gastro pub is as our menu was based on traditional pub food & always has been
  • In addition we held tribute acts live music events that all the village could come together for a great time
  • Sadly these were not well supported
