BABERGH and Mid Suffolk District Councils have restated their commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant – an important pledge for thousands of families in the districts.

The covenant sets out action the council will take to support those who serve, or have served, in the Armed Forces, and their families.

It recognises the unique obligations of, and sacrifices made by, the armed forces community and states they should face no disadvantage compared to other citizens.

The councils have long-supported the covenant but wanted to restate their commitment and set out a refreshed action plan to meet its goals.

Cllr Derek Davis, Babergh District Council's Armed Forces Champion, said: "The Armed Forces Covenant is important because it ensures that no-one with armed forces connections is disadvantaged in any way due to their service.

"For example, if someone is moving to the area after being based abroad and they need housing, it could be that have no local connection, which is obviously a big issue. But because they are serving, they can't be disadvantaged.

"It's hugely important, ensures respect and fairness for armed forces and their families, and all businesses should really get involved and pledge their support for this."

Cllr James Patchett, Mid Suffolk District Council Armed Forces Champion, said: "It is a contract between organisations and the veterans and serving military themselves.

"It recognises their different circumstances and special circumstances – particularly when it comes to things like housing and welfare needs.

"We are pleased to restate our commitment to the armed forces, and I would encourage other organisations to do the same."

The councils' commitment is set out in an action plan, including:

  • Special consideration is given to armed forces individuals and families when it comes housing, to ensure they are not at a disadvantage.
  • As part of wider work, the councils will consider how tenants and their families who are vulnerable as a result of military service are identified along with support options.
  • Raising awareness of opportunities to join the organisation among service leavers and supporting the needs of service families and reservists who work for the councils.
  • Council suppliers and local markets will also be encouraged to take action to support the covenant.

The councils will also be raising further awareness of the covenant with staff, including employer-supported volunteering opportunities relating to the armed forces
