Landlord of Hadleigh's George pub counting cost of Covid closure

By Derek Davis 10th Jul 2021

The landlord of a Hadleigh pub that was forced to close as he and his staff had to self isolate, is already planning on how to recoup their losses.

Andy Davis at The George, estimates the enforced closure has cost him around £25,000 in lost takings after missing out on two huge England games, and his usual weekly trade.

The historic pub in Hadleigh High Street closed before England's semi-final victory over Denmark, and will to open again until this coming Tuesday, meaning regulars will not be able to watch England taking on Italy in the Euro's final.

"It has been unbelievable bad luck to lose out on the two England games, which would have meant extra takings," said Mr Davis. "We had to cancel 200 bookings but are very fortunate though, that we have incredibly loyal customers and they have already said they will be back.

"Although customers will have to go elsewhere to watch the final I'm confident they will return to us and the diary is already filling up nicely.

"It was big worry but we have had deep clean, done the isolation thing properly and can't wait to reopen on Tuesday.

"A member of staff members tested positive last Friday (July 2) which meant a 10-day isolation. Since then we have had deep clean and the rest of use have stayed at home isolating."

The George hosts the weekly Meet Up Monday, which has just got back to normal, but will have to cancel this week's event due on July 12.

As one of the oldest pubs in Hadleigh, the George has a rich history including smugglers and getting through famous events, and now a pandemic.
