Constituency visits by MPs are usually a gentile affair used ostensibly for a photo opportunity.

However, two of South Suffolk MP James Cartlidge's attempt for positive publicity in Hadleigh appear to have rebounded after he was called out on his social media by a schoolboy.

Assington resident Cartlidge went to Hadleigh Water Recycling Centre last week to see the results of their multi-million-pound project to enhance local river quality

He highlighted how the project included upgrades to their phosphorus (found in soaps and cleaning products) removal processes, subsequently improving the quality of water discharged, ensuring that water quality and wildlife in the River Brett are protected, as well as other downstream watercourses.

He added: "This visit was particularly timely given the legislation announced yesterday whereby we will be removing the cap on penalties that can be handed out by environmental regulators - paving the way for unlimited fines for polluters.

"There has been a lot of press coverage of water companies in recent weeks, justifiably so, but we shouldn't ignore the positive news that is happening - especially on our doorstep."

Conservative MP Cartlidge, along with hundreds of other Tory MPs, voted in a bill supporting the water companies in their constant bid to pump sewage into our rivers, including the Brett and the Stour.

And Hadleigh teenager Oliver Eggby pointed out in response:

James, it's quite astounding to witness your visit to the Hadleigh Water Recycling Centre. How commendable of you to celebrate their multi-million-pound project and the supposed enhancement of local river quality. It's fascinating, though, how your actions don't quite align with your grandiose words. Because I'm sure you are one of the 264 other Conservative MPs who knowingly voted to indirectly allow sewage disposal in rivers until 2038. So, to be clear you voted to put sewage in our rivers, and now you're proudly parading around a water recycling centre, commending them on their efforts? The backtracking is truly impressive! We can only hope that one day your actions will match the lofty promises you make.

Meanwhile, a seemingly innocuous visit by Cartlidge to Hadleigh High School last month also drew a sarcastic and scathing comment from Oliver Eggby, praised by many Facebook readers, in comments and more than 40 likes..

While Cartlidge praised students for their 'super questions' from their head pupils andhow how he was pleased to hear about their plans to make the school more eco friendly, at least one senior student was less impressed with his visit.

Eggby responded by saying in his post:

Hi James, Oliver here, Head Student at Hadleigh High School. Thank you for your visit to our school. We're so glad you were able to answer our questions. It's fascinating how you managed to squeeze in a few moments of your precious time to grace us with your presence. We were truly captivated by your ability to contradict yourself within the span of a single visit. It's impressive how you conveniently forget your previous statements and then attempt to backpedal when confronted. And let's not forget your charming remark about teachers needing to work harder to deserve better pay. Your deep understanding of the challenges they face is truly admirable. And almost leaving without saying goodbye to the headteacher or signing out? Classic display of your dedication and attention to detail! We eagerly await your next visit, hoping for a bit more substance and authenticity. Thanks!

Young Eggby was praised for his sarcastic writing style and gentle criticism and being prepared to offer a young person's perspective and getting involved in local politics.
