Councillors are tonight expected to approve accepting a £129,800 insurance pay out for the fire which destroyed the sports pavilion at the Layham Road Sports Ground.

Royal Sun Alliance have offered the settlement that councillors will discuss at their full council meeting via Zoom at 7pm this evening.

Fire ravaged the pavilion last June, with police suspecting the blaze had been started deliberately at a nearby storage container, which then spread to the changing rooms.

If ratified, the money from the payout will be used towards building a new, single-storey sports pavilion, which would be available to use by a wide range of sports clubs, as well as the rugby club, which used the old pavilion.

Talks have already begun on how best to utilise any new facility and a working group is ready to bring a number of proposals to the council, and seek public consultation on the planning phase of the building of a new sports pavilion. Full story here...

Councillors will also be asked to consider the group's Vision document, which would include 3G pitches being installed, the possible formation of a management company or to outsource the administration to a specialist firm.
