A new People's Project initiative has been given the go ahead by Hadleigh town councillors, with £5,000 funding agreed to support the successful idea.

Hadleigh residents will be asked to submit project ideas for 2022/3 financial year, which they believe will could improve the town, and a shortlist will be put to a public vote.

A survey will be conducted by Hadleigh council with residents asked:

  • What one thing would you like to see happen in your neighbourhood?
  • How would you spend £5,000 to improve the lives of people in Hadleigh?

Although this is blank canvass some ideas already being bandied about include

Gay Pride parade, Guthrum statue, and youth initiatives among ideas for town council's £5,000 people's project grant.

Council staff, working with the successful bidders, would progress the initiative. There will need to be an element of realism when considering the applications as there will be some things that the council would not be able to do.

Ideas Wanted

Once ideas are submitted, we would convene a volunteer panel made up of two councillors, a staff member and two or three selected members of the local community who would review every idea and assess the feasibility of them.

Suggested assessment criteria:

  • That it is a one-off project
  • That it is within the Council's gift to deliver such a project
  • Costs £5,000 or less (or that we can identify a source of external funding which wouldn't rely

on Council resources to achieve)

  • Not be religious or political
  • That is benefits people who live in Hadleigh
  • That it doesn't conflict with the Town Council's Climate Emergency Declaration

New Christmas Funding

Meanwhile, town councillors had already agreed during their month full council meeting to provide £3,070 from Babergh's Welcome Back Fund, to buy up to 65 Christmas Trees for Hadleigh High Street Shop fronts, one twenty-five-foot Christmas tree for Hadleigh Market Place.

The funding would also cover the cost for their erection and removal, and the purchase of a new set of external Christmas tree lights for the Market Place Christmas tree.

*What ideas would you like to see as the People's Project?
