Did you know?

On this day in 1991, Ron Cassidy (who had been jailed for not paying his poll tax) was released after a 'whip-round' at his local pub so that he could play in a dominoes match.

Regulars at The Miners in Northumberland paid the outstanding £62 after Mr Cassidy was put in Durham maximum security prison for 90 days. He had being given a day's sentence for every 69p he owed of Mrs Thatcher's unpopular tax. Apparently, Ron's Ashington pub won.
