Ipswich's New Wolsey Theatre has a winner on its hands with the stage adaptation of the iconic 1984 film Footloose, which truly captures the essence of musical theatre.

It runs up to Saturday, 26 October. Book via this link.

By delivering exhilarating dance numbers, catchy songs that stick in your head, and characters you can't help but root for, it's no wonder that audiences are captivated by this timeless gem. Have you had a chance to see it yet?

The stage adaptation recreates the story of Ren McCormack (Luke Wilson), a young man who moves with his mother to a small town where dancing is banned by law. The town preacher Reverend Shaw Moore (Robin Simpson) enforces the ban, but it gets complicated when Ren falls in love with Ariel (Kirsty Findlay), the preacher's daughter.

The plot could be considered unlikely, but it is based on the true story of school students in a remote town in Oklahoma who, in 1979, set out to change the outdated law. Thankfully, the students were successful in their protests.

In their leading roles, Luke, Kirsty and Robin particularly caught my eyes and ears, as they must have done for everybody. It was also a treat to see the engaging Elizabeth Rowe (as Rusty) and Luke Thornton (as Willard) returning to the stage where they were so successful in their starring roles in last Christmas's Rock 'n' Roll Panto.

The numbers, including classics like Footloose, Holding Out For A Hero, and my personal favourite Let's Hear It For The Boy, are guaranteed to get toes tapping.

The show's strengths lie in its vibrant performances and infectious music. The cast delivers powerful vocals and energetic choreography, making the audience feel the passion and emotion behind each song.

Beyond the wonderful entertainment value, Footloose explores important themes of rebellion, conformity, and the search for identity. The show also offers a heartwarming message about the power of community and the importance of understanding one another.

For me, under the artistic direction of Douglas Rintoul and the musical direction of Richard Reeday, the New Wolsey has reached new heights with this all-American classic.

It has been said many times before, but it is worth repeating how enjoyable the talented actor/singer/musician/dancer productions are. They created the best onstage rock/pop show music I have witnessed on the NWT stage.

Whether you are a fan of musicals, a dance lover, or simply looking for a great night of entertainment, Footloose is sure to leave a lasting impression on people of all ages.

Ticket sales have been high, but there is still some availability at the warm and welcoming theatre. They can be purchased from the box office, at www.wolseytheatre.co.uk, or on 01473 295900 for the show which runs up until Saturday, 26 October.

The Theatre offers accessible performances providing wheelchair user access, audio description, British Sign Language interpretation, captioning, and a special relaxed/dementia-friendly performance. A touch tour is offered on one evening.
