BEM for Hadleigh resident Mary Dicks
A resident from Hadleigh was one of seven remarkable residents of Suffolk were presented with their British Empire Medals today, at a ceremony held by the Lord-Lieutenant of Suffolk in Euston.
In December last year, it was announced that 13 Suffolk residents had been awarded a national Honour as part of the King's New Year's Honours list, in recognition of their exceptional contribution to communities, charities and other organisations. Of these, seven Suffolk residents were awarded a British Empire Medal, which by tradition is presented by the King's representative and county's Lord-Lieutenant rather than from the King in person. In Suffolk, the Lord-Lieutenant is Clare, Countess of Euston.
The investiture took place on the Euston Estate, the family home of the Dukes of Grafton, and was attended by the recipients' friends and families as well as other local dignitaries.
Receiving their awards from the Lord-Lieutenant were:
Mrs Enid Bacon, Founder, Beck Row Preschool, Bury St Edmunds. For Services to Early Education
Mr William Michael Bulstrode– For Services to the Community in Framlingham, Suffolk
Mrs Janet Mary Dicks – For Services to the Community in Hadleigh
Mrs June Miller – For Services to the Community in Stanton, Suffolk
Mrs Bryony Emily Kate Peall – For Services to the Community in Saxmundham during Covid 19
Mr Stephen John Vale – For Services to the Community in West Stow
While British honours, such as the British Empire Medal, are only awarded to British and Commonwealth citizens, an Honorary award can be awarded to citizens of other countries in recognition of their work.
This year, an Honorary BEM was awarded to Mr (Revd) Simone Ramacci, For services to St John Ambulance and the community in Suffolk during COVID-19. Mr Ramacci is an Italian citizen.
Speaking after the investiture the Lord-Lieutenant said: "It is always such an honour for me to meet and speak with recipients of national awards.
"It is so heartwarming to hear their stories and the incredible work and contributions they have all made across our county.
"I believe we are lucky to have the honours system, which helps to reward and recognise people for the amazing work they do. I hope others will be inspired to look to their own communities and nominate those within it who deserve recognition and thanks for the exceptional work they do."
