With its miles of countryside, beaches refreshment stops, book and flower shops and bakeries, the Felixstowe peninsula is perfectly placed to find happiness.

Researchers have found the top ways for people to lift their moods include having a hot drink in a café, enjoying a walk in the countryside, a slice of cake - and buying fresh flowers.

A poll of 2,000 adults identified the little things people build into their routines to put a smile on their faces.

Reading a book (36 per cent), spending time with friends (29 per cent), and playing a song that brings back happy memories (28 per cent) all feature in the top 20.

Around two thirds (64 per cent) regularly set aside time to enjoy a little pick me up.

More than three quarters (77 per cent) consider these 'rewarding rituals' to be an important part of maintaining or improving wellbeing.

And 46 per cent value having something to look forward to - no matter how big or small.

Nic Moran, from M&S Club Rewards, which commissioned the research, said: "It is often the small things that can bring the most joy on a daily basis."

TOP 10 REWARDING RITUALS:

1. Watching your favourite TV show

2. A hot drink i.e. cup of tea or coffee enjoyed in a cafe

3. Enjoying a piece/bar of chocolate

4. A walk in the countryside or sea front

5. Reading a great book

6. Enjoying a slice of cake

7. Spending time with friends
