Acclaimed Suffolk food writer Charlotte Smith-Jarvis discovers beautiful new Suffolk ice cream pop-up with the dreamiest flavours in Hadleigh as part of her new, exciting, series of food and drink blogs with Suffolk Food Stories.

Chocolate Molasses. Caramel Miso. Blood Orange Custard. Pineapple and Lime Sorbet. These are just some examples of the magical frozen wizardry you'll be able to get your greedy mitts on in Hadleigh from this weekend.

Emy Gray, founder of Tornado Ices, has started a new collaboration with Frankie Atkinson of Frankie Ceramics (at the southern end of the High Street beyond the town library), so customers visiting the shop can now swing by to sample her imaginative pots of joy.

Emy, who lives in the nearby village of Boxford, started the passion project while she was pregnant with her second child, and has become a regular at Boxford's monthly farmers' market.

Each flavour is made carefully in small batches, using local milk, eggs and cream…and as much fresh seasonal fruit as she can get her hands on.

Tornado Ices specialises in unique flavours, using as much seasonal fruit as possible.

"Obviously there's not a lot of local fruit at the moment, but I cannot wait for the season to begin. I love foraging and using what's at its peak.

"I also love using unusual ingredients. So, my neighbour has the most amazing jasmine bush. I make a syrup with that to swirl into some of the ice creams. And I adore using rose petals too.

"I like my ice creams to not be too saccharin sweet…and to be a bit more unusual."

Emy cannot wait for strawberries to make their appearance later in the year, so she can churn up her delectable Strawberry and Rose Sorbet.

Other popular flavours, which should keep fans flocking back to Hadleigh throughout the year, will include Raspberry and Fig Leaf, Lemon Verbena, and custards swirled with mulberries, cherries, apricots and peaches.

"My mum keeps bees, so I do make a lot of honey ice cream too. And I like to make brittles as well - walnut and sage, pine nut and rosemary - that kind of thing.

"Ice cream is fun and playful. That's what I really love about it!"

Flavours at Frankie Ceramics will change every three to four weeks. The shop stocks beautiful pottery, from plates, bowls and platters, to dainty milk jugs and mugs, alongside loads of other lovely things for your home - hand-dipped candles, tableware, and fabrics from Constance and Denny.

Pump Street's chocolates and Easter collection have just dropped too. See the Frankie website for opening times and more details of pottery classes.

What is in a name?

Tornado Ices is named for legendary Boxford resident Tornado Smith, whose dad was landlord of The White Hart. Tornado both thrilled and startled villagers and visitors with his shocking Wall of Death stunt…often with his pet lion Briton by his side, who is buried in the grounds of the pub!
