Award winning Suffolk architects, Wincer Kievenaar, has teamed up with Hadleigh High School to support their literacy drive, with World Book Day 2022 providing the perfect conclusion for one event.

As the school's literacy coordinator Rebecca Taylor explained: "It is widely acknowledged that young people with poor literacy skills achieve less at every stage of their lives, compared to those with good literacy and this is shown not just in exam results, but health, well-being, finance and employment.

"We feel it is paramount to tackle literacy to overcome inequalities and allow all students an equal chance in life.†

As such the School, in collaboration with Wincer Kievenaar, held a "Readathon" as part of their package to tackle literacy.

This event culminated in a prize giving ceremony at Hadleigh High School on Thursday 24 March, where James Rush, Associate at Wincer Kievenaar, gave a speech and presented the prizes to the winning students. 

Mr Rush explained the importance of good literacy for future success and gave examples of how he and his colleagues require excellent standards of literacy on a daily basis.

He praised the students' efforts and encouraged them to continue developing their reading habits.

Evie Newman, winner of the Kindle said "I really enjoy reading - it is a way to escape the real world and be somewhere else.

"I didn't expect to win this morning but I was very excited to. I have always wanted a kindle."

Phil Branton, director at Wincer Kievenaar and said: "We were delighted to be given the opportunity to play our part in the Readathon.

"Our involvement demonstrates that it is not just teachers who believe in the power of good literacy, but potential employers as well."

Students read 992 hours during the Readathon. Several students said it was the first time in a while that they had finished a book, and they were looking forward to reading more.

It is hoped that the Readathon, together with other measures the school is taking to tackle literacy, will make a big impact on the literacy of many students at Hadleigh High School.
