Steve Holder's covid concerns as Hadleigh United crash to league leaders Wroxham

Steve Holder has expressed concerns that his Hadleigh United side face even more disruption to their league season.

Missing four players due to covid, the Bettsiders went down 3-0 to Thurlow Nunn league leaders Wroxham and Holder admitted he can't see too much football being played early in the new year.

Hadleigh are due to play south Suffolk rivals Brantham on Boxing Day but rising numbers of the omicron variant has left the whole fixture list in doubt.

"We had four missing with covid and the whole bench was made up of reserves as there game was called off due to players catching it.

"Going into January I can't see many games being payed, virtually everyone knows someone that has covid and football clubs are no different and we have to be sensible."

Playing for the first time in a month, due to cancellations, the Brettsiders dominated league leaders Wroxham for the first 29 minutes before being hit by a double whammy as the Yachtsman took advantage of poor defending to grab two goals in three minutes.

Matty Hayden who has already played for Heybridge Swifts and Brantham Athletic this season, bagged a brace, while Tom Huckerby opened the scoring.

Hard working Hadleigh had no answer to the clinical league leaders that took their chances and even the return of striker Joel Glover couldn't spark a revival.

Holder said: "We have had a month off and we were playing the top of the league side, so all I asked was that we worked hard and at ties I felt we dominated, especially the first half hour.

"It was a bit of free hit for us today and they scored agaisnt the run of play, then got a bot of lucky goal early in the second half, so it was always going to be difficult - they have quality all over and they are top of the ease for reason."

"We have to pick ourselves up and having Joel back is a massive boost for us.

"Everyone is happy to see him back. Whenever Joel is playing we know there will be goals, he is one of the best strikers in this league."

Glover, who took a four-month break from playing football to work for a church charity in Brazil, admitted he found it hard going.

"It was tough one to be honest given the circumstances," said Joel. "With the team not playing for a month and my fitness was tough.

"It was a competitive match as you would expect as Wroxham are a good side but we all gave 100% and it was frustrating at times."

Glover was glad to get the full 90 minutes, which he believes will hold in good stead going forward, if all the agnes go ahead.
