Landladies Wendy and Janet set to call last orders for final time at Kersey Bell

By Derek Davis 1st Oct 2021

One of Suffolk's oldest pubs is to change hands in November after the two current landladies called time on their tenure.

Janet Woodard and Wendy Green are leaving the picturesque 14th century Bell Inn, Kersey, in November after a seven year stay.

Wendy, who got married last year to Scott Gray, admitted the last 18 months had taken its toll on the two landladies and had decided not to renew their lease with owners the Stonegate Group.

"Covid really hit the hospitality industry hard and we are just tired," Wendy told Nub News. "Our lease ends in November and as emotional as we know it well be, it is time for us to leave.

"It will be hard to leave because we have built this pub up and we have lovely customers, but we need to go now."

Dozens of people took to the Kersey Bell's social media page to wish them well and vowed to pop into the pub before they left on November 28

Wendy added: "There have been so many lovely comments, it really is quite emotional.

"We just want to thank everyone for supporting us over the past seven years."

The pair will be taking a break once they leave but Wendy admit she will probably start job hunting when she comes back.

Earlier in the year filming in the village saw the Bell's name changed to the Queens Arms for a new television series starring Timothy Spall. (Full story here...)

The Stonegate Group has been approached for comment about its plans for the Bell Inn and we await their response.
