Reader's Letter: Hadleigh Guildhall Court Yard

Dear Sir

I can not see why the Town Councillors are making a fuss about the courtyard between the Council Offices and the Corn Exchange when their staff are fully aware that the Market Feoffment, owners of the Guildhall complex for some 600 years have all of the documentation on the land.

The Corn Exchange was sold in the 1970's into private hands. The sale clearly stated that there was no land with the building but the owners had right of access to the back door of the Corn Exchange and access on one yard around the building for repairs and renovations.

When it was sold on to Suffolk County Council it was clearly defined in their documentation that they had no rights to use the Courtyard.

There is also documentation from the late 1970's from Babergh clearly stating that the Court Yard was not to be defined for Parking as a defined parking area would be detrimental to the Grade 1 listed building, but would also attract Council Tax.

The properties on the High Street that have access on to the Market Feoffment's private road have right of access via the road but no access to the Court Yard.

Having been a Councillor in the past for a number of years I am aware that there has been a number of attempts by owners of the Corn Exchange to claim the right to parking on the Court Yard and I would be surprised if the current owners purchased the building without confirming its boundaries.

The Market Feoffment lands were not registered with the Land Registry as they were not likely to be up for sale and previous councils did not see the need to spend money on registering them.
