Suffolk county councillor Mick Fraser has revealed safety measures are to trialled in Hadleigh's Benton Street after a spate of incidents along the pavement.

Lorries and cars mounting the pavement in the narrow street, causing a hazard to pedestrians and damage

Cllr Fraser said highways engineers are looking at ways of improving the situation and said: "Ive worked with Suffolk county council and there should soon be some traffic management safety measures put in place as a trial, to see whether it improves the safety situation there.

"In Benton street the particular problem is that hundreds of vehicles a day drive on the pavements and that is a serious hazard."

Cllr Fraser told us what the plan is: "They are going to re-align the on street parking with an appropriate build-out to improve the forward vision for cars in order to alleviate head on confrontations that result in one or both cars manoeuvring onto the foot paths."

Residents are also calling for the speed limit to be reduced from 30mph to 20mph in that part of town.

John Cunningham, of Benton Street, said: "I suggest that a speed limit of 20 miles an hour for vehicles using the towns roads would be far safer than at present.

"The lower noise produced by vehicles travelling at this reduced speed would be beneficial.

"With the roads being narrow and twisty I do feel that the speed limits on the whole of this road needs to be reviewed urgently particularly those parts where a dangerous 60mph applies at present."

Cllr Fraser, who is both a district and county councillor representing Hadleigh, is not convinced a reduction in the limit is wanted our needed.

He said: "It's going to have to be a broad consensus of support. On the back of one person's opinion, it is hardly a ground swell that could be considered, there would need to be a much broader voice going on about this and it would have to fit the criteria set out by Suffolk County Council.

"People have mentioned speed limits to me before but apart from ground level conversations it hasn't been any deeper than that."

What areas need addressing in Hadleigh? Do you think the speed limit should be reduced? Are there any problems you have noticed on the roads?
