Hadleigh town clerk's behaviour questioned after posting derogatory social media message about work colleague

This article inaccurately states that Wendy Brame had "posted a derogatory message on social media about a work colleague." This is misleading; Mrs Brame pinned the post in question to her Pinterest board prior to working at the council and it could not therefore have been directed at a work colleague at the council.
This correction has been published following an upheld ruling by the Independent Press Standards Organisation.
Hadleigh town clerk Wendy Brame's suitability for her role has been questioned after she posted a derogatory message on social media about a work colleague.
Mrs Brame's ability to fulfil her role as the town's clerk, which now includes much of the former town council manager's duties, has also been questioned after it emerged she also works as a clerk for another council.
Concerns have also been raised regarding her qualifications for the combined role, which appear to fly in the face of the requirements published when the posts were advertised.
A post on Mrs Brame's Pinterest account that criticised a work colleague was spotted by a Hadleigh resident who spoke with Nub News on the understanding they would not be identified, as they were close to council officers.
"This post appears to be symptomatic of Wendy's attitude towards her staff," Nub News was told: "We know office politics can be cut throat and we have seen for awhile that not all is well in the town council offices but this blatent rudeness and disregard for a colleague speaks volumes."
The post has subsequently been removed along with others, after Nub News asked for comment.
Hadleigh mayor Gordon McLeod insisted Mrs Brame had done nothing wrong and she has his full backing.
He said: "No complaint has been received and I do not have the authority to investigate this matter, nor will I be asking her to resign."
Mrs Brame also works as a clerk on a part-time basis for Stonham Parva parish council on top of her full time work for Hadleigh council and a resident has queried if tax-payers were getting value for money from the clerk whose renumeration package just for her Hadleigh role is around £50,000 a year.
The resident said: "Unless she is some sort of wonder woman I can't see how she can do the combined role of a full time town clerk, which she was doing before, and a full time town council manager's role, as well as working for another council, are we being short changed here?"
But Cllr McLeod was satisfied the council is getting full value for money
"The town clerk is not required to fulfil the roles of two people," he said. "The town clerk's job description has recently been updated, as agreed by full council, to reflect changes to the staffing structure.
"As a consequence we have advertised for an additional role of assistant clerk.
"The town clerk is fully focused on town council business and has the support of the council."
Cllr McLeod finally addressed issues regarding Mrs Brame's qualifications and suitability for the dual role. after it appeared she did not meet the required criteria.
Mrs Brame's involvement in an allegation of minutes being manipulated has been made publicly by former clerk Diana Stroh but Cllr McLeod declined making comment on that issue, due to potential legal proceedings.
Cllr McLeod claimed: "The town Clerk was appointed as the town Clerk (and not the town council manager) following a full recruitment and interview process and started with the Town Council in January 2021.
"The required qualifications for the town clerk role included holding the CiLCA qualification or having equivalent knowledge and experience. The town clerk satisfied this requirement."
Hadleigh town council meets tomorrow (Thursday, May 19) at 7pm at the town council offices, where the election of the mayor and deputy mayor, will be among the agenda items.
